  • Dec 2006 - Feb 2008
Senior Fellow, ATREE. Contributing to and strengthening the conservation and livelihood program with a particular emphasis on land stewardship in the areas of agroecology and agroforestry. Also interested in appropriate institutions and technology to promote livelihood-linked sustainable biodiversity use.
  • May 2000 - Nov 2006
Director, Ashoka Trust for Research on Ecology and the Environment, Bangalore. Institutionalized a decentralized model of management at ATREE that builds individual ownership and initiative. Lead a team of 120 staff including 25 professionals with advanced degrees. Coordinated the institutional research and outreach programs from drafting proposals to management of projects. Projects varied from scientific research in natural resource management and conservation science, to agro-forestry interventions and hands-on educational outreach in rural and urban areas. Strengths are in planning and implementing innovative models of land stewardship and conservation linked to improving rural livelihoods. Provided inputs to projects on good governance, capacity building and institutional linkages for long-term sustainable change on the ground. Lead and co-lead several consulting assignments for the institution.

  • Nitin Rai, Samuel T, Gladwin Joseph, Jason F, Seema P, Ganesh T. 2007. The team conducted a social and environmental assessment of the 6 project sites across the country indentified as possible implementation areas for the proposed Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Project funded by the World Bank. We evaluated the community willingness to participate in the project, mapped stakeholder interests and suggested a participation framework. It also assessed the regulatory legal and policy issues in each site and concordance with World Bank Operational Policies on Indigenous Peoples, Involuntary Resettlement, Forests, Integrated Pest Management and Natural Habitats. The site reports identified key site related social and environmental issues in each context. They examined likely impacts of the project and suggested mitigation measures and safeguards. The assessment also suggested a monitoring and evaluation framework and capacity building needs and investment.

ATREE was requested by MOEF to submit a report on definition of forest(s) after wide consultation and review of literature. We held a series of consultation throughout India and developed a definition that would meet various criteria. However, the final report contained two broad, but alternate definitions as they represented differing perspectives on how forests are to be defined.
  • Gladwin Joseph, Jagdish.K, Bibhab Talukdar, Harini Nagendra. 2004. The Phobjikha Wetland, the Black-necked Cranes and Community Livelihoods: An Integrated Assessment ATREE undertook review of relevant data and identified potential land use and agricultural practice related threats to the species and its habitat. Economic and ecological drivers were analysed. Gaps in the scale and scope of management were identified and changes suggested. After developing a monitoring and capacity building program, the current situation of crane habitat was determined. A plan of action was devised based on assessed threats and broader determinants.

Oxfam Market Feasibility Study at Anantapur District The project developed a business strategy for processing, value addition and federated marketing of usufructs. It identified 5-10 common products, identify value addition and processing needs, and assess federated marketing of these products. The study also conducted a cost benefit, legal and policy analysis for the proposed marketing institution.
  • Gladwin Joseph, Ankila Hiremath, Seema.P, Nitin R, Jagdish.K, Irfan, Soubadra D, and Nitin Rai. 2004. Capacity Building, Integrated monitoring and Adaptive Management Research. The study aimed understand how to enhance the resilience of complex systems comprising villages and hamlets in a matrix of agricultural and forest land, within the Papagni Watershed. It examined drivers underlying demand and supply of key ecosystem services, as well as their inter-linkages that affect the provisioning of different services. An understanding of these drivers and their interactions enabled us to suggest alternative management scenarios that could help to maximize the resilience of socio-ecological systems (SES), while at the same time optimise provisioning of key ecosystem goods and services. The study developed a plan for adaptive management through initiation of site-specific monitoring and evaluation.
